Phish dusts off deep cuts in return to stage

HAMPTON, Va. – The Phish has landed.

The Vermont jamband ignited the second stage of its career as a touring juggernaut Friday night at the Hampton Coliseum, rocketing deep into their past to sate fans who've been waiting years to see them play live again.

With deep cuts like "Fluffhead," "Divided Sky" and "Chalkdust Torture," the foursome built the backbone of its first set on old-school material, expertly navigating hairpin changes and showing as much spunk as they ever have in this millenium.

Fans began to materialize around the spacecraft-styled hockey arena in Virginia by early afternoon, then swelled to a hollering mob by nightfall -- a scene the band's fiercely devoted following has longed to see since Phish called it quits in 2004.

Guitarist Trey Anastasio, brisk and energetic, snapped into the crisp form he was feeling around the time of their New Years Eve show in 1999, a widely accepted zenith for the band (except the moment ABC's coverage of Y2K cut to Peter Jennings introducing them to their largest TV audience ever as "The Phish").

While the band's detail-oriented crowd has never let Jennings live that one down, they were forgiving of Phish's five-year absence, crowding the Hampton area with rental cars, "no vacancy" signs and ticket-seekers, who patrolled highway exit ramps Friday evening, offering to trade cash or tickets for stops along the band's sold-out summer tour.

Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, keyboardist Page McConnell and drummer Jon Fishman are playing three shows in Hampton, their first since an amicable split that turned out to be more burnout therapy than the end to their 20-year run on the road.

Fans responded. When the reunion concerts were announced last fall, seats for the opening show were being resold for as high as $1,000 — and even more nefarious tactics than scalping were at play: Inside the venue on Friday, 29-year-old Rod Stewart said he bought a fake with a happy ending.

"We bought three tickets in the parking lot for $100 each, and when the lady scanned them, they came up 'counterfeit,'" said Stewart, of Chesepeake, Va., "but she let us in anyway."

Ryan Lafata, a spokesman with the Hampton Convention and Visitors Bureau, said it's possible to have upwards of 75,000 people come to the area for the three shows at the Coliseum, which holds about 13,000 for general-admission events.

Many of those fans included those who didn't have concert tickets, but traveled to congregate outside the coliseum to take in the scene and reunite with old friends.

Brett Hinckley of Greenville, S.C., said the coliseum is a favorite venue for Phish and its fans, who call the building "the mother ship" because of its resemblance to a giant UFO.

"The energy in the building is second to none," Hinckley said before the show. "Once you experience it, you just kind of need to be back."

Phish, which formed at the University of Vermont in 1983, is known for its amorphous blend of rock, jazz, bluegrass and other styles, which often launch into intense improvisations. Often likened to the Grateful Dead, they are a moderate commercial success in terms of sales, but remain a lucrative touring act.

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Denise Richards may be a contestant on the new season of Dancing With the Stars, but this certainly wasn't the first time producers came calling.

"When they asked me to do it originally, my mom was still [alive] and both my parents were like, 'You're going to get voted off right away because women hate you,' " Richards tells me as she's making breakfast for her daughters, Sam and Lola. "And I thought, 'They're right. This may not be a good time to do the show.' Granted, a lot of them still hate me, but hopefully they hate me less. Time has gone by."

Richards, who has been filming the second season of her E! reality show during her training with dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, says she was finally ready to take the plunge this time around because, quite simply, "I'm at a place where I just want to live my life. What's the worst thing that could happen? What's the worst thing that people could say?"

Fortunately, she hasn't been hit by the Dancing curse à la Jewel and Nancy O'Dell. "Knock on wood, I haven't had any injuries," she says. "My feet hurt a little bit from being in heels all day, but other than that I feel really great physically." Worst thing she says is her never-ending appetite. "We rehearse like six, seven hours a day, and I'm starving," she says. "I can't stop

eating."

But the Dancing regime is bound to keep her in killer shape. So any chance that would lead to a second spread in Playboy? "I never say never," Richards says. "I don't want to sit here and say, 'I'll never do it again' and then a year from now you see me doing Playboy. But right now, I don't have any intentions."

As for how Sam and Lola are dealing with their dad Charlie Sheen expecting twin boys this spring with his wife, Brooke, Richards says they couldn't be happier.

"They talk about the boys all the time," Richards says. "They each have picked one. Sam has picked her brother and Lola has picked hers. Sam named her brother Duke and Lola named her brother Zoe. [Laughs.] I have no idea what Charlie and Brooke will end up naming the boys, but that's what my daughters have come up with. They're very cute and they're very excited. They'll be great big sisters."

The rapper, who gave birth just days after the Grammy Awards on February 11th, took to her MySpace blog slam reports that her boy would be going by “Icky”.

She wrote: “MY BABY IS NOT CALLED ICKITT, PICKIT OR LICKIT THANK YOU VERY MUCH TO ALL THE HOLLYWOOD PRESS. HES A BABY, HE DONT NEED PRESS!”

Following numerous engagement stories which ended up being denied, Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady have reportedly tied the knot during a small, private ceremony in Santa Monica on Thursday (February 26).

Breaking reports tell that the Brazilian supermodel and her Patriots quarterback beau said their “I Do’s” just before 6 p.m. at St. Monica’s church near the beach.

For the special moment, Bundchen, 28, wore “a form-fitting ivory lace strapless gown with a trumpet skirt, scalloped edges, long train and a floor-length veil with attached handmade satin roses and attached satin headband, all by Dolce & Gabbana,” tells an Us magazine insider.

The pair, who had Tom’s young son John Edward Thomas present for the nuptials, then headed back home to Brentwood for a small post-wedding celebration with loved ones.

“She’s definitely ‘The One,’” an insider close to Brady told press of Bundchen. “She really makes him comfortable and just happy.”

Rihanna has resurfaced.

After being shuttled to various locations over the past two weeks to protect her privacy, the 21-year-old star was photographed this weekend on the beach in Punta Mita, Mexico. She previously logged short stints in Los Angeles and her native Barbados.

Photos of her south-of-the-border sojourn first ran in today's print edition of the New York Daily News and were later obtained by E! News. She does not appear to show any of the bruising that was so clearly visible in her leaked police photo.

The images were reportedly snapped at a private villa on Saturday, a day after she celebrated her milestone birthday in L.A. Aside from a few backseat shots, it's the first time Rihanna's been photographed in public since the Feb. 8 altercation with Chris Brown that left her hospitalized.

Yesterday the L.A. district attorney's office said the investigation was still open and no decision on charges has been made.

The usual combination of yes, yes and wha-huh? ensued on American Idol tonight.

After another hit-or-(terribly)-miss performance night, the voting public lofted another three hopefuls into the upper echelons of Idoldom, aka the Top 12.

We had high hopes for Allison Iraheta, Megan Corkrey, Adam Lambert, Jesse Langseth and a couple others. But with only a few slots to fill, we were going to have to be wrong about some people.

Well, yeah, we were wrong. And yet right at the same time!

A big voice in a small package, 16-year-old Allison, singlehandedly woke up the judges, who had been sinking into their chairs under the weight of bad song choices, when she boomed out "Alone."

Her mature performance scored her tonight's first ticket into the Top 12 when Ryan Seacrest started the reaping and sowing.

Adam, with his David Cook-reminiscent hairdo and theatrical but inviting stage presence, was also a near sure thing—and sure enough, to his and our "Satisfaction," America agreed.

We had been thinking the third slot would go to one of the ladies—Megan, Jesse or Mishavonna Henson, perhaps.

But it was Kris Allen, aided by darn good looks, sheer likeability and potential—his "Man in the Mirror" was better the second time around, minus the nerves— who filled the final slot.

Minus the six slots that will be filled in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the judges finally admitted out loud that they would be picking a few of their favorite for the upcoming Wild Card sing-off, to take place March 5.

"Maybe even a couple from tonight you're going to see again," teased Simon Cowell.

The last group of semifinalists—Arianna Afsar, the lucky Felicia Barton, Kendall Beard, Ju'Not Joyner, Nathaniel Marshall, Kristen McNamara, Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Jorge Nuñez, Von Smith, Taylor Vaifanua and Alex Wagner-Trugman—take the stage next Wednesday.

Well, look who got married after all.

Despite repeated denials that they were even engaged, Gisele Bündchen and her Super Bowl-winning beau, Tom Brady, have sealed the deal.

The swell-lookin' pair swapped vows Thursday in a Catholic ceremony in Santa Monica, with Bündchen donning an ivory strapless gown with a trumpet skirt and long train by Dolce & Gabbana, E! News has confirmed.

The Italian design duo also outfitted the supermodel's three beloved dogs in floral lace collars.

Brady's 1-year-old son, John Edward Thomas Moynahan, his child from a previous relationship with Bridget Moynahan, was among those in attendance at the intimate ceremony. Curiously, Bridget Moynahan is a member of the parish where the wedding took place, St. Monica's Catholic Church.

News of the wedding was first reported by Us Weekly.

Bündchen's last dodge of the whole "I do" question came just last month, when a Brazilian magazine asked her to confirm a report that Brady had popped the question in L.A.

"I wasn't even there. How can that be true?" replied the 28-year-old model, who before her New England Patriot came along was prominently linked to Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Boston Globe reported yesterday that Bündchen was spotted over the weekend with a gold ring on that finger while celebrating Carnival in her native Brazil.

Newlywed Salma Hayek took time out last night to support another important man in her life...her hairdresser!

The actress hit Robert Vetica's Good to Great Hair book launch at Beso. And while she was wearing her blinged-out wedding band along with her engagement ring, no questions were allowed about her Valentine's Day vows to billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault.

However, she did dish about another new project in the works—her own recession-proof cosmetics line!

"I am trying to develop a line with a drugstore so that it's affordable for everyone," she said. "I've been doing research for two or three years. My whole approach is, how can we get the essence of the really expensive ones but for everyone to be able to use?"

Nice to know marriage to one of the world's richest men hasn't changed her.

Also at the party: Debra Messing and Rose McGowan, who said Vetica may style her hair for her upcoming wedding to Robert Rodriguez. "It's going to be private, with a nice big party!" she said.

Drew Barrymore to Direct Third Twilight?

Drew Barrymore knows a thing or two about extraterrestrials, so vampires shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

The E.T. actress is in talks to direct Eclipse, the third entry in the Twilight franchise.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Barrymore is among the top choices to follow in the footsteps of Catherine Hardwicke, who helmed Twilight, and Chris Weitz, who's about to start filming the first sequel, New Moon.

Hardwicke opted out of the franchise because she felt she didn't have enough breathing room to do the follow-up justice. And because of producer Summit Entertainment's tight release schedule—New Moon is set for a Nov. 20, 2009, release and Eclipse just six months later, on June 30, 2010—Weitz will be in post-production on New Moon while Eclipse is filming.

Barrymore has just wrapped her feature-directing debut with Whip It!, starring Ellen Page.

A rep for Barrymore declined to comment on the report.

• Eddie Murphy is attached to star as his idol, Richard Pryor, in a new biopic being written and directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls). Murphy is reportedly taking a big paycut for the potentially Oscar-bait project, according to Entertainment Weekly.

• Antonio Banderas has been wooed for Woody Allen's next project, per Variety, joining an all-star ensemble that includes Slumdog Millionaire's Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins. As usual, the Oscar-winning auteur is keeping a tight lid on the plot of the untitled flick, which starts shooting this summer in London.

• Returning to his stand-up roots for the first time in seven years, Robin Williams will do a brief five-night residency at Broadway's Neil Simon Theater April 28-May 3 as part of his latest solo show, Weapons of Self-Destruction. The funnyman kicked off an 80-city trek earlier this month in Santa Barbara, Calif.

• Per the Hollywood Reporter, Seth Green has signed on to star in Disney's Mars Needs Moms, the Robert Zemeckis-produced CGI adaptation of Berkeley Breathed's children's book about a boy who stows away aboard a UFO to save his mom (Joan Cusack) from a bunch of ETs. Dan Fogler and Mindy Sterling costar.

• Chris O'Donnell coming aboard CBS' NCIS spin-off opposite LL Cool J. The actor will play Callen, the troubled, mysterious lead agent of a squad of naval investigators whose reputation for undercover work is impeccable. The show debuts later this season as a two-hour special.

After much speculation, it appears Hugh Hefner will not give Kendra Wilkinson away on her wedding day to Hank Baskett.

"I would definitely love for him to walk me down [the aisle]," Kendra tells E!'s Daily 10 of Hef's offer, but adds that she decided her brother would ultimately be a better choice.

"I think it would mean a lot to my family and me down the line," the bubbly blonde says. "It just makes more sense."

So does Hef have any hard feelings about the change of plans?

It doesn't sound like it, since they're still getting married at the Playboy Mansion. "Hef loves Hank," Kendra tells E! News, revealing that the two men in her life share another common interest—both are big fans of the comic book character Flash Gordon.

One subject Hef and Hank don't agree on? Reality TV. Kendra says she can't wait for her spin-off show to start this summer on E! but her fiance isn't as eager. “It’s hard for him. He's a football player,” says Kendra.

And although her own love life is going great, Kendra can't help but reflect on Holly Madison's sudden split with Criss Angel.

“It sucks that they broke up, and I hope she finds what she was looking for,” says Kendra. “I don't know what happened. I hope she finds happiness. She is a great person with so much love to give.”

The Answer Is Nope: The question is, "Are you the only person who skips the American Idol results show and reads online recaps instead?" Last night's results show, airing on Thursday, instead of Wednesday, per usual, was watched by a season-"low" 20.7 million, preliminary Nielsen estimates showed.

Good Thing for Idol That CSI Isn't What It Used to Be, Either: Downsized or no, Idol was still the night's No. 1 show in viewers and in the 18-49 demo. CSI finished second for the night in viewers (17.8 million), and tied for second in the demo with the hot Hell's Kitchen (9.9 million overall viewers).

Stupid Network Tricks, Part 1: NBC again burned off a new 30 Rock (6.3 million) after an old Office (5.3 million). Compared to its last new episode, which did air after a new Office, the Tina Fey comedy was down nearly 20 percent in viewers, and nearly 25 percent in the demo.

Stupid Network Tricks, Part 2: NBC aired its kid-friendly Kung Fu Panda special, Secrets of the Furious Five (4 million), opposite the first half-hour of the kid-dominating Idol.

Etc.: Ugly Betty (6.8 million) had a rough time against Idol, while Survivor: Tocantins (12.3 million) held up OK. ER (8.7 million) won the 10 p.m. hour in the demo.

New Street Fighter Flick Awful—in an Awesome Way

Review in a Hurry: Remember how you believed they couldn't possibly make a cheesier adaptation of the Street Fighter video games than 1994's Jean-Claude Van Damme campfest? Wrong! But here's the thing—Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is indeed terrible, but in kind of an awesome way.

The Bigger Picture: Director Andrzej Bartkowiak made the last good Steven Seagal movie (2001's Exit Wounds), briefly turned DMX into a credible action star by pairing him with Jet Li for two movies...then screwed up the big-screen version of Doom so heinously that he should never have been let near a video-game license again.

But hey, Sega keeps letting Uwe Boll ruin their adaptations; why should Capcom be any different? (Except you may end up wishing Boll were in charge. At least he would have woefully miscast someone like Meat Loaf, and created an awkward "twist" unhappy ending.)

The Street Fighter games tell of a karate-fighting twosome named Ryu and Ken who enter martial-arts tournaments, so of course both movie adaptations have pretty much ignored all of that.

Here, the focus is on Chun-Li (Kristin Kreuk), a concert pianist turned wushu master, who must avenge her father's kidnapping at the hands of an inexplicably Irish-accented Bangkok crime lord named Bison (Neil McDonough), who cleverly conceals his evil syndicate via a front organization called Esperanto.

Where to even begin with this one?

For starters, there's the fact that Chun-Li's family name spontaneously changes midmovie on her family tombstone, from Xiang to Huang. There's Chris Klein's woodentastic channeling of Point Break-era Keanu as an Interpol agent. Chun-Li's attempted lesbian seduction of Bison's henchwoman. Asian kung-fu master Gen (Robin Shou) mispronouncing the name "Ryu." Screenwriter Justin Marks' reliance on fortune-cookie platitudes ("You're hurting me!" "No! You're hurting yourself!").

But perhaps worst of all is that the movie doesn't even have the courage of its campiness. If you're going to give Vega (rapper Taboo) his metal mask and claw, why skimp on the snake tattoo and matador tights? Why is Bison wearing a suit instead of a red military getup? At least the 1994 movie tried to give the goofy outfits a reason for being. Oh, and Chun-Li? Guile called—he wants his trademark 360 flash kick back.

The 180—a Second Opinion: The fight choreography, at least, is decent. And like we said, the movie's awfulness is amazing and hilarious in its own way—someone will likely have devised a drinking game for it by the time you read this.

But the It's Complicated star seemed to take it all in stride and—despite being asked such inane questions as "How's Charlie doing?"—managed to offer up a couple of waves.

Britney Court Circus: Sam Attempts to Scapegoat Adnan

Sam Lutfi is apparently willing to do anything to clear his name—even if that means trashing the name of fellow former Britney Spears hanger-on Adnan Ghalib.

The "Toxic" singer's litigious, pill-mashing former manager says in court papers that while he has not attempted any direct contact with the singer, her onetime paparazzo boyfriend has.

The allegation was made in a Los Angeles Superior Court declaration filed as part of his ongoing efforts to avoid a permanent restraining order barring him from any contact with Spears. A similar order is being sought against Ghalib and a lawyer accused of plotting to pry Britney loose from her papa-powered conservatorship.

"I did not initiate any direct communication with Britney Spears," Lutfi says in the voluminous filing. "Although I did receive text messages from her, all responses to those messages were conveyed to Britney through others, including…Adnan Ghalib."

Lutfi, who has been quietly abiding—or so we thought—under a temporary restraining order since last year, also said he has "exchanged test messages with Ms. Spears," but claims to have only done so through an intermediary and denies he ever threatened the pop star.

Earlier this week, Spears' head of security testified that he witnessed Lutfi attempt "to contact Ms. Spears by sending text messages" to the singer's hairstylist, Roberta Romero.

In a declaration filed Feb. 23, security team member Itamar Geldman stated that he called Lutfi on Dec. 28, in front of Romero and Spears, to tell him to stop trying to contact either woman.

Romero also took to the stand this week, telling the court Lutfi had sent her several "harassing" messages to "try to get information…about Britney," and that the singer asked her to cease all contact with him.

A printout of the alleged text messages shows that the first one, sent by Lutfi on Christmas Eve, asks Romero, "Can you wish her a merry Christmas for me?" All subsequent messages were sent Dec. 27 and Dec. 28.

Jamie Spears testified this week that Lutfi had sent his daughter texts on a prepaid cell phone, which he has since confiscated from Britney. He identified numbers on the phone as belonging to Lutfi and Ghalib.

Lutfi's new accusations couldn't have come at a worse time for Ghalib.

The shutterbug turned himself in earlier this week to face felony charges for allegedly ramming into the process server who was attempting to hand over the original restraining order earlier this month.

He pleaded not guilty to assault with a deadly weapon, battery and hit-and-run. No court date has yet been set.

Word is, Rihanna and Chris Brown are back together.

People reports that the R&B-star duo are spending one-on-one time at a residence belonging to Sean "Diddy" Combs.

E! News learned earlier this week that the pair had been in touch, with Brown contacting Rihanna on her 21st birthday on Feb. 20.

A rep for the "Disturbia" singer denied that she had talked to him on the phone but... They apparently reconnected somehow.

"While Chris is reflective and saddened about what happened, he is really happy to be with the woman he loves," a source told People.

This looks to be the pair's first in-person reunion since Brown was arrested Feb. 8 for allegedly assaulting Rihanna and leaving her with visible injuries. Except for flashes of them in transit from here to there, and some pics of Rihanna that just surfaced from her sojourn to Mexico last weekend, both have lain incredibly low since.

George Clooney met with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden yesterday at the White House, so which Hollywood stars could be next to visit 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

Sir Elton tells me he's hoping to meet with the president sooner than later to lobby about HIV/AIDS and gay rights.

"I want to go there as soon as possible to discuss [a national AIDS strategy] and gay marriage," John said at his 17th annual Oscar party and fundraiser for his AIDS foundation. "You read in papers that there are schools that won't even put on Rent! You think, 'Oh, my God! What kind of country is this?' Hopefully, with this administration we will be making headway."

Meanwhile, Drescher revealed that she's working on getting some face time with first lady Michelle Obama in April.

"I want to talk to her about health issues, particularly women's health issues worldwide," Drescher said, "and how we need to transform women from patients to medical consumers and what we need to change the way women thinking about putting their health first."

And yes, Drescher is still contemplating seeking elected office—and she refuses to start small. "If I run," she said, "I'm going to run for the Senate."

Not all talk was so heavy at John's gala. The music legend's husband, David Furnish, chatted up his next movie producing gig, Pride & Predator. "We're taking a Jane Austen-type story and dropping in an alien from outer of space and having him go through and slash to horrific effect," Furnish said. "We're hoping it's the Jane Austen film that guys will take their girlfriends to."

No one has been cast yet, but first-timer Will Clark will direct with John supervising the music. "We're going to studios now," Furnish said. "I want to get it up and financed."

Cate Blanchett is looking for a few good Merry Men.

Per Variety, the Oscar winner has signed on to play Maid Marian in the tentatively titled Nottingham, director Ridley Scott's big-screen reimagining of the Robin Hood story opposite Russell Crowe.

Blanchett will replace Sienna Miller, who dropped out due to "creative differences."

Crowe will play the lead, which, depending on how the script turns out, could either be Robin Hood or a reinvented Sheriff of Nottingham.

The $130 million romantic adventure starts production in April in London for a 2010 release.

Meanwhile, in other casting news, the new Melrose Place has its first resident, and an Office star is ready for some time traveling...

• Eliza Dushku has snagged the rights to make a feature-length biopic on famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Indie documentary producer Ondi Timoner (DiG!), will make her feature-helming debut on the flick, titled The Perfect Moment.

• Michael Rady (Swingtown) is the first actor to land a role in the pilot for the CW's new version of Melrose Place. He'll play a quirky 25-year-old aspiring filmmaker who pays the bills shooting weddings and bar mitzvahs after moving to L.A. with his fiancée.

• Taking a break from Office work, Ed Helms is set to topline an untitled Warner Bros. comedy flick as a Civil War reenacter who ends up going back in time to the real Civil War. Office boss Steve Carell will produce.

• Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are joining forces for Sony Pictures' The B Team, an action comedy directed by Adam McKay (Talladega Nights, Anchorman) that will see the duo playing cops. No word exactly on the plot.

• According to the Hollywood Reporter, Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher) will take his first lead in a television drama series in the NBC pilot Trauma, playing a stoic trauma doctor juggling his high-stress job with family life. Kevin Rankin, Cliff Curtis and Jamey Sheridan are in talks to costar.

Nick Mitchell's Top 36 Inclusion Explained: In terms of total viewers, last night's American Idol peaked in the 8:30 p.m. half-hour, scoring 25.1 million for Mitchell's Norman Gentle aerobics, preliminary Nielsen estimates showed.

Fodder for Idol Conspiracy Theorists: The much-hyped Adam Lambert, not unlike the prior week's much-hyped Danny Gokey, sang in the final spot in the final half-hour, reaching the show's largest 18-49 audience.

Lucky Break? The unfortunate song choices from leadoff performers Jasmine Murray, Matt Giraud and Jeanine Vailes were contained to Idol's least-watched half-hour and its lowest-rated in the demo.

Bottom Line: Pushed back to Wednesday because of President Obama's speech, Idol's performance show was down 1 million viewers from last Tuesday's, from 25.4 million to 24.3 million.

Crossing Over a Supersober Multiculti Mess

Review in a Hurry: This oppressively earnest piece of Oscar bait—with Harrison Ford as an immigration officer conveniently at the center of every ethnic drama in L.A.—was rightfully left to thrash around on the hook.

The Bigger Picture: Writer-director Wayne Kramer struggles to depict all sides of the immigration issue in this sprawling Los Angeles-based melodrama. The topic is fraught with ethical dilemmas—the tension between opportunity and resources, assimilation, cultural clashes...oh, I could go on! But Kramer avoids zeroing in on any single controversy and opts for the scattershot approach.

Crossing Over zips among every ethnic group with a representation in the U.N. You got the Persians, the Japanese, the Mexicans, the Arabs, the Bangladeshis—hell, even the Aussies make an appearance. Having this multiculti kaleidoscope of traumas is a sympathetic idea, but the reliance on laughably two-dimensional characters makes the execution embarrassing.

Now, all these different ethnic clans tangentially intersect with Max Brogen (Ford), a Scotch-swilling grizzled immigration officer with a frosty demeanor but a warm spot for migrant women. Max and his partner—a well-to-do Americanized Iranian immigrant—hunt and help (in their own questionable ways) different characters desperate to stay in the U.S.

Their tribulations crisscross with those of a dedicated immigration lawyer (Ashley Judd) and a brutish naturalization bureaucrat (Ray Liotta). And true to the current trend (Traffic, Crash, Babel) all these disparate stories merge together in a final scene! What a refreshing dynamic!

Ford's wooden style feels disengaged, while the ensemble cast of unknowns go at their parts with high-decibel veracity. The fresh-faced supporting players do a fair amount of scenery chewing, but they give the film an authentic and poignant tone. It's a shame their efforts will be eclipsed by this ham-handed fiasco.

The 180—a Second Opinion: Crossing Over follows in the same tradition of Crash and Traffic, and though it's a fatally flawed movie, it has more heart and complexity than those other Important Films.

How can Kristen Stewart complain about Twilight and keep working?

I assume you're talking about the Nylon magazine interview, in which Stewart calls Twilight fans' enthusiasm "thoughtless"? Or how her dad went even further and implied that Twilight is not a "great movie"?

But it's not just Stewart slinging buzzkill. Remember how Katherine Heigl spat on Grey's Anatomy's writers, moaning that her $225,000-an-episode lips weren't getting enough scenery to chew? Or teenage Jessica Biel, who whined about the limitations of her role in 7th Heaven?

All of them are still being pelted with money, thanks. And the main reason is that in Hollywood, what sounds like a complaint is actually a secret code that means something completely different.

So what's the message?

How about "I want more money," or "I want out of my contract," or "Hey, casting directors, I'm not just a pretty ass, I'm, like, a serious actress, so go ahead and consider me for that role as a peasant girl suffering from rickets"?

As for exactly what Stewart said, she told Nylon, ""Anywhere we'd go for Twilight was a psychotic situation. The sound was deafening, and it's thoughtless, as well…You get a slew of all these bullshit questions like, 'What's it like to kiss a vampire?' and 'How much do you love Robert?' Then you'll get one that's actually real, but you're like, 'No, I can't right now, I can't even consider [it]."

Sure, casting director Bonnie Gillespie tells me, some studio publicist may give the whining actress a "hand-slapping" after seeing a quote like that, but most Hollywood players know that when the talent complains, it's really more about business. And more often than not, the producers hear the call and give the actors something, like, say, dollars, to shut them up. And then everyone goes back to their emerald palaces or wherever it is that they live.

In fact, it's not impossible that an actress' complaints come at the prodding of some personal publicist eager to reposition a client.

"It wouldn't surprise me if a publicist were saying, ‘It might be wise to drop a subtle complaint'," says Gillespie, who runs the casting and production company Cricket Feet.

And those complaints? They work. Thanks to her complaints—plus a nearly-nude shoot at age 17 in Gear magazine—Biel got out of her contract with 7th Heaven.

"It's never that an actor actually has a complaint about a project they're working on," Gillespie insists. "It has everything to do with politics."

No Plow Punishment for Mercury Man Jeremy Piven...for Now

Mercury poisoning has not made Jeremy Piven toxic on Broadway.

A grievance committee did not rule against the actor Thursday after considering a formal complaint brought against him by the producers of Speed-the-Plow, the show he prematurely left in December after being diagnosed with a high mercury count.

"The Producers, who initiated the proceeding, did not prevail in their attempt to convince the Grievance Committee that Mr. Piven should not have dropped out of the play on the instruction of his doctors," Piven's rep, Samantha Mast, said in a statement to E! News.

"Although the Producers might have expected to receive the support of Actors' Equity, they did not; the union sided with Mr. Piven."

A committee of 10—five Actors' Equity members and five from the Broadway League—were on hand to hear the case and were unable to reach what needs to be a unanimous decision for further action.

"The producers have the right, as a next step, to proceed to arbitration," the organizations said in a joint statement.

Piven's early exit from Speed-the-Plow due to mercury poisoning, which his doctor determined was brought on by eating too much sushi, gave producers pause because Piven had already expressed interest in leaving the show ahead of its scheduled closing this month, according to the New York Times.

His employers filed the grievance Jan. 16.

Shortly before noon, the Emmy winner walked into the Actors' Equity Association building in New York to face the music.

Earlier Thursday, AEA spokeswoman Maria Somma told E! News that the union would be representing Piven and that today's proceedings were private.

"Actors' Equity will not comment on any aspect of the grievance to protect all parties involved," she said.

Why does Miley's Oscar gown look really familiar?

You speak of Miley Cyrus' sparkling tribute to the mighty Neptune, king of the sea. Fashion insiders are buzzing that it looks just a leeeetle too much like an iconic Dior gown from 1949 called the Junon. Whether it teeters closer to homage or tips all the way over into ripoff territory, well, that's a matter for debate.

Just how similar are these dresses? Well...

"You could argue that it isn't [a ripoff], because the original gown is strapless," says onetime Project Runway contender and fashion designer Nick Verreos, who pointed out the similarity to me. "But I was surprised at just how similar the beading and shaping of the skirt was. If it was just a train, or just the back..."

In the past, designers have sued each other, but only when one used an exact pattern or print copyrighted by another. Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld forgave Courtney Love a few years back after she wore a knockoff of one of his gowns to Paris Hilton's birthday party.

And what of Zuhair Murad, who created Miley's gown? When he first debuted it on the runways in January, neither he nor any other major fashionista bothered to call out the similarities between Murad's gown and the Junon. If Murad had wanted to credit Dior as an inspiration, maybe gush something about homage or employ some other French word, that would have been the time.

When contacted by me about the similarity, a publicist for Murad said, "Zuhair is aware of the similarity of this gown. He is constantly inspired by Christian Dior, and this gown, in particular, re-creates the look of the Dior gown using today's technology."

Harry Potter vs…The Avengers?!

The final, still-untitled Harry Potter movie will open Jul. 15, 2011, Warner Bros. confirmed today, setting the young wizard up for a wand-to-armor matchup with Marvel/Paramount's planned Iron Man-led blockbuster, The Avengers.

Elsewhere, Warners penciled in its own in-the-works superhero flick, The Green Lantern, for Dec. 17, 2010, and pushed Robert Downey Jr.'s non-Iron Man vehicle, Sherlock Holmes, back six weeks, from Nov. 13 of this year to Christmas Day.

The Harry Potter movie previously had been down for a general, Summer 2011 opening.

"It's funny because there are only a half-dozen films in 2011 [with release dates]," Exhibitor Relations box-office analyst Jeff Bock tells E! News, "and they picked that one."

Funny, yes. Deliberate, definitely, according to Bock.

"Warner Bros. didn't blink when they saw [The Avengers'] release date and title, and it's up to Paramount to make the next move," Bock says, adding he expects The Avengers to eventually get a new release date.

Sherlock Holmes and 2012 know all about showdowns that don't happen. By moving the Downey adventure to Christmas, Warners gets the movie out of the way of Roland Emmerich's latest sci-fi epic, which was, and still is, set to open Nov. 13.

Green Lantern, about the ring-bearing Justice League of America member of DC Comics fame, is in the script stages. No cast or director has yet been announced. The Avengers, about the Marvel universe's own superhero team-up group, is expected to be chaired by Downey's Iron Man.

Iron Man 2, also starring Downey (natch), is down for a May 7, 2010, release.

Britney Spears to Get Sawed in Half and Other Circus Tour Secrets

Sort of like a wayward career, Britney Spears is going to disappear into thin air—and then magically reappear, to her fans' ecstatic delight.

"Right away, she got into the boxes and into the magic contraptions to learn the stuff, and she's so excited about this tour and all the elements that are in it," illusionist-comedian Ed Alonzo, "the Misfit of Magic" (and former Saved by the Bell diner owner) who will be doing a number with Spears on her Circus tour, tells E! News.

The pop star will serve as Alonzo's assistant in the bit.

"We're going to be doing the classics of magic but a little high-tech," he said. "We'll be doing a little dissection, transposition, a vanish, an appearance—and if I do a trick, she doesn't just hold the props, she's actually getting inside the big boxes or I am slicing her up."

Sounds a bit risky, which is perhaps why Team Spears decided to leave the tricks to a professional.

I "made [the tricks] really easy for her...but there are some complicated things that she is doing that you would think a contortionist would have to do, or a trained magician's assistant," Alonzo said. "But because...she's a dancer, it really makes sense to put her in the magic, and it works and she's really, really good at it."

"Some of it's pretty scary, but she gets right in there with no reservations," added Alonzo, who also serves as a lead illusionist on the MyNetworkTV show Masters of Illusion.

He wouldn't divulge which Spears tunes would be accompanying his mini magic show, but—news flash—Alonzo did assure us that the overall show will feature "the best music of Britney that people have loved over the years and, of course, brand-new favorites from the new album."

And, like us, Alonzo has only seen Spears in warm-up clothes and sneakers during rehearsals, although she has been testing out different pairs of heels here and there.

The three-ring circus-inspired set is "exactly what you would see in a big giant Vegas production show, but it's going to be on the road," he said, and anywhere from 75 to 100 crew members and performers are usually around at any given time.

"It's going to be an amazing concert for people to watch," he said. "It's like watching a big Cirque du Soleil high-tech circus, but with a really focused star in the middle of all of this."

LAPD Still "Vigorously" Investigating Rihanna Photo Leak

The Los Angeles Police Department is still trying to plug its leak.

The internal investigation launched last week into who provided TMZ.com with a photo of Rihanna that was taken after she was allegedly assaulted by Chris Brown is still underway, E! News confirmed Tuesday.

"They said they were looking into it vigorously," LAPD spokesman Lt. John Romero said, referring to a statement made by an Internal Affairs commander at a meeting earlier in the day.

"We are not talking about the protocols because it will relate to this investigation," he said, unwilling to divulge further details about investigative procedure.

A law-enforcement source tells E! News that police have identified the computer they believe to be the one from which the photo originated, although they have not figured out who transferred the image.

Per protocol, the LAPD has not formally identified Rihanna as the victim of what transpired between her and Brown on the morning of Feb. 8. In announcing the investigation into the leak, authorities would only say that the photo appeared to have been taken "during an official domestic violence investigation."

"A violation of this type is considered serious misconduct, with penalties up to and including termination," police said.

Meanwhile, the investigation into Brown's conduct continues, as well. Law-enforcement sources have told E! News that prosecutors are looking for evidence to build a felony case against the R&B star.

After being booked on suspicion of making criminal threats on Feb. 8, Brown made his way to Virginia to be with his family. Rihanna was treated overnight at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and then traveled to her native Barbados.

She left the Caribbean island sometime last week, and her current location is unknown.

The Governator is ready for a Rambo summit.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has agreed to make a cameo as his state-ruling self in Sylvester Stallone's latest testosterone-fest, The Expendables. The flick is set to begin shooting March 28 in Brazil and will then move to New Orleans for an additional two months of photography.

Stallone, who wrote the script and will also star and direct, will shoot his good pal and former Planet Hollywood partner's cameo in Los Angeles. The movie also costars Sly's former nemesis from Rocky IV, Dolph Lundgren, along with Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Jet Li and Forest Whitaker.

Since taking political office in 2003, Schwarzenegger has appeared briefly in only three other films, 2003's The Rundown, the 2004 Jackie Chan bomb Around the World in 80 Days and 2005's The Kid & I, but there have been strong hints he will pop up in this summer's Terminator Salvation.

In other movie news, an Oscar nominee is finding work, Green Hornet gets a new boss and a certain dance-happy daytime TV host is going to the dogs...

• Variety reports Melissa Leo, who scored a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for Frozen River, has been cast opposite Hilary Swank, Minnie Driver and Sam Rockwell in the indie legal drama Betty Ann Waters.
• Per the Hollywood Reporter, Ellen DeGeneres has signed on to voice the lead stray dog in Warner Bros.' Dog Show, an animated comedy about a stray pooch and her misfit friends who crash the purebred world of dog shows. This is her first voice role since 2003's Finding Nemo.

• Lipstick Jungle star Lindsay Price will play one of a trio of witches in the upcoming ABC drama pilot Eastwick, based on the 1987 hit movie The Witches of Eastwick.
• Acclaimed helmer Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) has been tapped to take over The Green Hornet, starring Seth Rogen as the classic hero and Stephen Chow as his sidekick, Kato.

It appears Madonna is making good on reports that she’s gotten her 22-year-old Brazilian pal, Jesus Luz, hooked on Kabbalah.

The hottie model was spotted attending services with Madge Saturday morning at the Kabbalah Center on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles.

I’m told he got along quite well with Madonna’s kids. “He was playing around more with Rocco than paying attention to Madonna,” a source reports.

The Madonna-Jesus Hollywood tour started on Thursday night at Cecconi’s in West Hollywood, where they appeared quite close and cuddly but not exactly romantic.

While Luz was nowhere to be found when a solo Madonna hit the Vanity Fair party on Sunday night, they were later seen (as I first reported) locking lips at her second annual VIP-only Oscar soiree she hosted with Demi Moore and Guy Oseary.

“They weren’t making out, but just a kissing a little bit,” a source explained.

Then on Monday, the two were back at the center, says another source, to mark “the new moon in Pisces."

Sources down in Brazil still insist there’s nothing more than a friendship going on between the two. “I’m sure Madonna is laughing about it,” another source said. “It’s not like they’ve ever confirmed they were dating.”

Madonna's camp also says this is no steamy love affair. "Clichéd as it sounds, they're really just friends," her rep tells me. "I know it doesn't make for a juicy story, but it's the truth."

The two met through photographer Steven Klein when Luz was featured in a photo spread Klein shot of Madonna for W magazine in Rio de Janeiro.

Prior to landing on the West Coast, Madonna and Luz also attended Kabbalah services in New York City.

No wonder Jennifer Aniston received so much affection from John Mayer on Oscar night.

It turns out that while the singer was happy to provide "moral support" to his girl at the Academy Awards, he was also "very, very nervous" about attending.

"It's not my world, the Oscar thing," Mayer told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM show Wednesday. "But [Jen] was so sweet to me that night, because you can go from a Grammy winner to a water boy when you walk into the Kodak Theatre on Oscar night." He added, "While it was really, really fun, the whole thing is very odd to me."

"I basically stepped into the picture frame of Hollywood," he explained. "And you have to really be with someone you know has your back in that situation, and she did, and it was really great."

As for why the normally low-key couple chose such a high-profile event to go so public with their relationship, John told Ryan, "At some point, you feel comfortable and say this is the choice I want to make. I think a year is a pretty good period of time with which to say, yeah, let's go have a really good time at the Oscars."

Taylor Swift Still No. 1; Jonas Showdown Coming

The countdown is on to whether her ex Joe Jonas and his sibling act can topple the Taylor Swift juggernaut.

The country songbird, who's the closest thing the music industry has to a stimulus plan, fended off Gap Band frontman Charlie Wilson to notch her 10th week at No. 1, as Fearless sold 62,000, per Nielsen SoundScan.

This might be the end of her run, however, as Swift not only faces the Jonas Brothers' concert movie soundtrack but also U2's No Line on the Horizon and Kelly Clarkson's All I Ever Wanted over the next three weeks.

Wilson did finish a respectable No. 2 for the week, selling 58,000 of Uncle Charlie. He previously peaked at No. 10 as a solo artist with 2005's Charlie, Last Name Wilson.

Lady Gaga's The Fame, which debuted in stores last summer, finally cracked the top 10, moving 32,000 at No. 10. The album features the Grammy-nominated chart-topper "Just Dance" and the red-hot new single "Poker Face," both of which are currently top 10 on the Hot 100.

Meanwhile, Morrissey's ninth solo album, Years of Refusal, sold 31,000 discs at No. 11. Other newcomers include M. Ward (aka the "Him" opposite Zooey Deschanel in She & Him) at No. 31 with Hold Time, the Annie Lennox Collection at No. 34 and Thursday's Common Existence at No. 56.

Oscar domination gave an early bounce to the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack, which climbed 26 spots to No. 22. Digital downloads of the album, which more than doubled between weeks, is largely responsible for the surge.

Total sales are down 13 percent compared to last week but down just 7 percent compared to the same week in '08.
